That's true. Honestly, I was very close to just leaving the whole phrase out. I don't see how it could be considered a core tenant of Christianity, and it's just too vague to be useful theologically. Apparently even Luther avoided specifics of the doctrine:

Interesting idea!

One thing that bugs me in your hybrid creed is the phrase "he endured the full wrath of God’s punishment for sin". Not the I necessarily disagree with its sentiment but it places undue emphasis on the penal substitution theory of atonement that wasn't present in either of the original creeds. It's fine if you're coming from the reformed tradition but if you want your creed to be relevant to other traditions in Christianity it'll cause problems.

Mike,
We are on the same page. Wow!
Wonderful article and great comments. You may find our work of interest.

Our You Tube Channel

Our website, as listed in the box,
contains descriptions of our Discovery Concerts.

We just launching a social media campaign with a big assist from a
Cisco Systems executive - so our
web legs are a bit wobbly. But we've been giving Discovery Concerts since 1996. Things took on a life of their own, and what was the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey for 18 years became The Discovery Orchestra in 2006 - No more traditonal performances. We only present Discovery Concerts. One, "Bach to the Future", became a public television show in 2003 and a new one "Discover Beethoven's 5th" will be released by American Public Television in 2011. Would love to get your feedback. The Discovery Orchestra has a facebook page http://on.fb.me/edpBdw
and I tweet @CatchMaullaria.

Best wishes,
George Marriner Maull

I should have added that I've tried similar experiments (albeit on a smaller scale - I don't have a musical ensemble at my disposal) in my lounge room using a Powerpoint slide that has a simple running commentary on a piece of music. Having seen novice audiences getting bored out of their brains at live concerts, it is *electrifying* to see the light in their eyes when it clicks and they understand the music for the first time.

Expect to hear great things!

Thank you all for the kind words. :)

Matthew: The section idea is certainly a more practical approach, and is probably a good solution for most pieces. I like the idea of a test run--I'd certainly be willing to experiment with a group here at UMD. Perhaps I'll ask around.

I've also tossed around the idea of writing some software to help the music folks script these sorts of presentations so it's less of a burden for them. With a microphone and some simple pattern recognition, one might even be able to (mostly) automate the "display coordinator" position. :)

Brilliant. The equivalent of surtitles for instrumental music. It would create a whole new musical culture, and enhance the existing one.

Bring on the display coordinators!
