The Republic of Kosovo

The people of Kosovo made international news headlines yesterday by declaring their independence from Serbia. The world has drawn up in opposing camps regarding the decision; the US, the UK, and other EU states support Kosovo’s independence, but Serbia, Russia, and China have declared their indignant refusal to recognize the declaration’s legitimacy. I guess nobody’s really sure where this is going to go, but it raises the question: at what point in the development of a people group does it gain the right to self-govern? If the Albanians in Kosovo can be independent of Serbia, why can’t the French Canadians in Quebec be independent of Canada? What about Taiwan? What about the Confederate States of America? What about Texas? I’m sure everyone wants to resolve this without war, but does that mean accepting the sovereignty of every group that wants to self-govern? Lots of questions, and not so many clear answers.
